The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This
Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
